About the Summer Research Fellowship (US)

The Summer Research Fellowship (US) is a prestigious paid program that brings together emerging legal experts to focus on the legal, ethical, and regulatory issues posed by AI technologies. As a fellow, you will work directly with LawAI mentors to develop a research project tailored to your interests and expertise. You will have the opportunity to conduct groundbreaking research that shapes the future of AI law and policy.

Fellows will be involved in research activities that may include writing a policy report, drafting law review articles, supporting ongoing advisory projects, and offering insights to governments, international organizations, and the private sector.

Key Program Details

  • Duration: 8-12 weeks, remote-first, with an in-person week in Washington, D.C. (July 7-11, 2025).
  • Stipend: $15,000 for the full duration.
  • Mentorship: Fellows will be matched with a mentor from the Institute’s staff who will guide their research and professional development.
  • Networking: The program offers opportunities to engage with leaders in AI law, policy, and technology law through Q&A sessions and career development resources.
  • Washington, D.C. Week: Fellows will meet in-person for a week of collaboration and networking, with eligible travel expenses covered (flights, accommodation, meals).

Cohorts & Start Dates

The program offers two start dates:

  • Cohort 1: May 27, 2025 – August 15, 2025
  • Cohort 2: June 16, 2025 – September 4, 2025

Fellows will be required to work full-time during their fellowship period, although exceptions can be made for candidates with academic commitments. Students can complete the fellowship part-time if needed, with extended durations.

Eligibility Criteria

We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds with a range of experience levels in AI law and policy. While previous experience in AI-specific research is not required, applicants should have a background in law and demonstrate an interest in AI governance and policy issues. The following candidates are encouraged to apply:

  • Graduate law students (JD, LLM), PhD candidates, and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Final-year undergraduate law students.
  • Professionals transitioning into AI law.
  • Legal academics.

In addition, applicants must be able to:

  • Commit to full-time, remote-based work for at least 8 weeks, beginning on one of the start dates.
  • Attend the in-person week in Washington, D.C., from July 7-11, 2025.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and present their research findings during the fellowship.

Research Focus Areas

As a Summer Research Fellow, you will choose a research topic aligned with the Institute’s mission and current workstreams. Possible areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Institutions and Procedures: Governance frameworks for AI technologies.
  • Law & Compute: The intersection of legal analysis and computational technologies.
  • International Regulatory Institutions: AI governance at the global level.
  • Liability and Insurance: Legal implications of AI errors and insurance.
  • AI Agents and the Rule of Law: How AI impacts legal principles and decision-making.

You are also welcome to propose research topics related to AI law and policy that align with our objectives, including ensuring AI benefits society while safeguarding public welfare.

Application Process

The application process consists of several stages. We review applications on a rolling basis, so early submission is encouraged:

  1. Step 1: Submit your academic CV and brief application form by 11:59 pm on January 15, 2025. This takes about 15 minutes to complete.
  2. Step 2: Complete a recorded video interview (approximately 30 minutes) where we’ll ask you about your interests, values, and approach to research.
  3. Step 3: Participate in a research interview (40-60 minutes) with a LawAI staff member to discuss your research interests, goals, and fit for the fellowship.
  4. Step 4: After review, successful candidates will receive a fellowship offer.
